Cate Blanchett is to play the role of Lucille Ball in an authorized biopic, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
The Oscar-winning actress has signed up to play the role of Ball in the movie, which is set to be written by Aaron Sorkin, the man who has penned usually male-centric TV and movie creations including The West Wing, A Few Good Men, and the forthcoming Steve Jobs.

Sorkin has yet to start work on the Ball biopic, but is said to be the top choice to write the project which has been authorized by the late actress' children Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., whom she had with Desi Arnaz, her husband from 1940 to 1960.
The film will center on the four-time Emmy-winning actress' life, documenting her experiences during the making of some of her hit TV shows such as I Love Lucy and The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour.
But while the Internet was excited to hear news of a Lucille Ball biopic, many potential fans reacted with skepticism about Sorkin's ability to write a feature telling a female story.

"Sorkin feels like a weird fit for Lucille Ball. Her story doesn't scream angry male energy," one Twitter user wrote.
"Does Aaron Sorkin even KNOW how to write a movie focused on a woman?" asked another.
Blanchett, however, is a popular choice, and the Australian actress is no stranger to biopics. She won her first Academy Award for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator.
